Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the entire leadership of the American Bar Association Section of International Law (ABA International), welcome to the new bar year! Elections and appointments to the leadership have been completed and the FY 2010-11 Leadership Directory is available online. If you pick up any errors, please let Julie Pasatiempo (, Deputy Staff Director, know. She will have them corrected in the online version.

One of our goals for this new ABA year is to increase membership both domestically and internationally. Our leadership retreat was the kick off for this major goal. We had one of the best leadership retreats we’ve ever had earlier this month in advance of the ABA Annual Meeting.

More than 150 Section and committee leaders from eighteen countries gathered for two days in Berkeley, California. We devoted a portion of the retreat to recognizing our new members and some of our dedicated committee leaders and other volunteers who made the past year such a success (The award recipients are all listed below).  We then turned the mic over to them as they gave their perspectives on committee best practices.

One of the best parts of the retreat was the team building cooking exercise. See the pictures online, (username: cookbook, password: cookbook).  Despite the large butcher knives, no one got hurt and lots of us made new friends - a success from all points of view.

Following the retreat, we headed across the Bay Bridge to San Francisco for the ABA Annual Meeting.  This was also a great success, with over 400 Section members participating.   We offered and co-sponsored a full slate of CLE programs, including a very well-attended showcase session on “Lawyers Surviving in a Darwinian World” featuring Presidents of the Paris, Japanese, German, Australian and English Bars.

In addition, in the perspective of closer cooperation and membership outreach, our Section leaders met with the Presidents of the following bar associations:

Bar Council of England & Wales
Council of the Bar and Law Societies of the European Community (CCBE)
German Bar Association (DAV)
Hispanic National Bar Association
Inter-American Bar Association
Japan Federation of Bar Associations
Korean Bar Association
Law Council of Australia
Law Society of England and Wales
Law Society of Hong Kong
Law Society of Ireland
Law Society of Northern Ireland
Union International des Avocats (UIA)

We discussed many opportunities for collaboration with respect to programming, policy and rule of law activities, and discussed preliminary plans for joint conferences in Munich, Germany and South American, Los Angeles among other initiatives.

There were receptions and dinners each evening and for those who can never get enough socializing and networking, a Section “After Hours Lounge”.

I would like to extend special thanks to the Section’s outgoing Liaison Officer -- Gabrielle Buckley -- for maintaining our relationships with these bars and arranging the bar leader meetings; to our Leadership Retreat Co-Chairs – Robert Brown and Sara Sandford – for pulling off a terrific event in Berkeley; and to our Annual Meeting Co-Chairs – Yee Wah Chin, William Black, Kristin Myles, Lisa Savitt, and Gabrielle Buckley – for a great Annual Meeting.

Most of all, a big thank you to all of our outgoing officers and our Immediate Past Chair, Glenn Hendrix, who has been tireless in expanding the Section’s reach throughout the world.  Glenn has worked determinedly to ensure the continued success of the Section, and it paid off with a fantastic year.

And a big welcome to our incoming officers and division chairs.  Click here for an updated listing.

Please feel free to contact any of the officers, division chairs and myself whenever you have questions, ideas, concerns or advice to offer.

As you scroll down this letter, you will see many of the new initiatives we are undertaking this year to increase our Section member benefits from all perspectives.

I am looking forward to a great year and hope you will consider being an integral part of our team.

Salli A. Swartz
