L21 was formed in 2002 by David Coleman and John Lee. In the space of a few years, the company successfully established itself as a leading Australian research and conferences organisation. Dr. John Lee, Managing Director

John is a co-founder of L21 and is currently its Managing Director. He also serves as Chief Editor of all L21 publications. In addition to responsibilities with L21, John is also a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Independent Studies (CIS) – Australasia’s leading policy think-tank – in the Centre’s foreign policy desk.

John brings to L21 considerable international experience in research and analysis. An expert in international relations, his current work looks at political, economic and security developments in the Asia-Pacific region, especially relations between Australia, United States, China and countries in Southeast Asia.

John is frequently interviewed by media networks for his viewpoints and analysis of international developments. These include television news and current affairs networks such as Nine Network, Sky News, SBS, and ABC in Australia; CNN in Asia, and BBC in the UK. His opinions have appeared in many newspapers including The Australian, Canberra Times, Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Financial Review, The West Australian and The Adelaide Advertiser, as well as the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong, and Pacific based Islands Business. He has conducted radio interviews for both national and regional ABC stations, as well as stations based in London, Washington, and Beijing such as BBC and Voice of America.

He has published books, monographs and articles for several think-tanks such as CIS in Sydney, Australian Strategic Police Institute and Strategic & Defence Studies Centre both in Canberra, as well as UK based organizations Oxford Analytica, the Royal United Service Defense Institute (RUSI) and the Royal Institute of International Affairs (RIIA). His research has been published in several academic and policy journals, including the Australian Journal of Politics & History and the influential Washington based journal The National Interest. John has also been asked to occasionally brief senior public servants within the Dept. of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Dept. of Defence.   

John holds a Law degree from the University of New South Wales, along with a First Class Honours degree in Philosophy. In 1998 he was awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship to study at University College, University of Oxford. He holds a Masters and a Doctorate in International Relations & Politics from Oxford, where he was also a tutor.

David Coleman, Chairman

David Coleman is a co-founder of L21 and was the Managing Director of L21 until 2004. He is currently Chairman of the L21 Group; and is also the Director of the Group’s corporate advisory arm, L21 Corporate.

Prior to this, he was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company, and a senior executive with the technology companies Looksmart and dstore. He holds degrees in Law and Arts from UNSW, where he also served as President of the Student Guild.

David is currently the Director of Strategy at PBL Media, Australia’s largest, most diversified media and entertainment group.
